More seats added to Sask Polytech health worker program

An extra 72 seats will be added to the Continue Care Assistant program at three Saskatchewan Polytechnic campuses, including Prince Albert.

The new seats will be available starting in September, according to a news release from the school Monday morning.

“The need for Continuing Care Assistants in Saskatchewan has never been greater,” said Christa MacLean, dean for the School of Nursing and School of Health Sciences at Sask Polytech.

“CCAs are a part of our School of Nursing and we want to recognize this investment in our program during National Nursing Week. CCAs play a crucial role in providing essential support to the frail and vulnerable.”

The new seats mean there are now 245 seats available in SaskPolytech’s 32-week program.

The Government of Saskatchewan is funding the extra seats as part of its effort to deal with a shortage of health care workers in the province and allocated $1 million to the new seats this year.

Domestic and international students can apply and many use the CCA program as a steppingstone to pursue a nursing career.

CCAs help people with mobility, hygiene, communication, or end-of-life care.

People can apply now for school in the fall.
