Attempted murder charges laid after RCMP shot at on Ahthakakoop Cree Nation

A 24-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after RCMP officers were shot at on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation.

Sheldon Badger was arrested by members of the Warrant and Enforcement Suppression Team (WEST) on April 10 and remains in custody.

Police said that they were in the community around noon yesterday and saw another man, 42-year-old Prentice Bowman, walking around. They were looking for him on outstanding warrants for uttering threats, assault with a weapon, and other gun-related offences.

They spotted two men walking, one of whom was identified as the suspect they were looking for and attempted to arrest him.

When they did, the second man pulled out a gun and shot towards officers. One officer returned fire. No one was injured in the exchange.

The second man ran away but officers found him nearby at about 2:30 p.m, and arrested him. A gun and ammunition were also found and seized.

In addition to attempted murder, Badger is charged with having a gun while under a prohibition order and not having a license. He made his first appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court today and will be back on April 12.

Bowman remains in custody for the outstanding warrants, but officers say they are not considering charges in connection with the shooting.

The GIS have taken over the investigation, which will continue with members of WEST and the Forensic Identification Service.
