North Wake Martial Arts set to host 2024 Taekwon-Do Provincials

Mar 8, 2024 | 3:17 PM

Martial artists young and old from across the province will be flocking to Prince Albert this weekend for their shot at gold in the 2024 International Taekwon-Do Federation Provincial Championships.

The tournament is being hosted by North Wake Martial Arts and takes place Saturday at the Prince Albert Armoury in the Exhibition Grounds.

Lucian Phillips is the head instructor at North Wake and said that the club is ecstatic to host the provincial championships and they are looking forward to showcasing the local Taekwon-do talent.

“Our club is pretty pumped, a lot of work has gone into organizing it,” he said. “We have about 18 to 20 from our gym going and there’s about 120 competitors overall from the province coming.”

He added that a tournament like provincials is a great way to get familiar with the sport if you’re a newcomer, or to perfect your craft if you’re an experienced vet.

“These provincials are always a great place for coloured belts to start, there’s usually more coloured belt competitors than there are black belt competitors. It’s good to get the experience in, especially if they want to compete further on into Westerns and Nationals and even further. We have some students who are national champions, so these tournaments are just a nice way for them to loosen up and get ready for the other competitions coming up.”

Phillips continued by explaining that the provincial tournament is a build-up to the North American Invitational Taekwon-Do Championships along with the Canadian Western Championships. The North American tournament is set to happen over the May long weekend in Regina while Westerns is slated to happen sometime in October or November but currently has no set host location.

Taekwon-Do Provincials get underway from the Prince Albert Armoury at 10:00 sharp on Saturday morning and is open to spectators. Doors open at 9:00.
