Saskatoon’s Soup Master is a Chef from Prince Albert

A Prince Albert chef has been named Saskatoon’s Soup Master of the Year.

Genalyn Dioso, the Executive Chef at the Northern Lights Casino, competed at the Nutrien Wintershines YXE Chefs’ Soup Cook-off earlier this week and ended up taking home the top honours.

Along with being given the Golden Ladle Award, her soup won both the Judges’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice Awards.

Dioso told paNOW that getting the public’s vote was extra special because of a conversation she had.

“I was questioning (my abilities) as there was a lady there who told me ‘I don’t expect you to win this competition.’”

She doesn’t know why she said this but thinks it may have been because she’s from Prince Albert. The Cook-Off is a Saskatoon event and features local chefs. Dioso first competed in 2023 as a last-minute replacement.

“We had the longest lineup, and they said our soup was the best last year,” she said.

Despite this, Dioso didn’t win.

“This year, we had the same acknowledgment and recognition and fortunately we won this year,” she laughed.

She was also told that winning both the Judges’ and Peoples’ Choice Awards was a rare feat at the event. She hopes this helps prove to some that there are great chefs in smaller Saskatchewan communities.

“We have well-qualified and high-caliber chefs in Prince Albert.”

Dioso’s entry was a three-sisters soup, an Indigenous meal that includes corn, beans, and squash. She ended up getting a bit creative and added other vegetables and bison. The vegetables were all gathered at the Prince Albert Co-op, while the meat was from Bison Ridge Farms.

She explained making an Indigenous soup was top of mind since she works for the Northern Lights Casino which is run by the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA).

Meanwhile, Dioso also noted she couldn’t have won without the rest of her team which included Travis Sanderson, Phillip Pambrun, Darren Clarke.
