Carlton teacher to be inducted into P.A. Women Hall of Fame

A teacher at Carlton Comprehensive Public High School is the latest inductee into the Prince Albert Women Hall of Fame.

The P.A. Council of Women has chosen to recognize Jennifer Brown after receiving nominations from multiple different people. This included Janice Henry who was the president of the Métis Women of Saskatchewan when Brown was a teenager.

“She took me under her wing in terms of Métis politics for the better part of 15 years,” Brown said.

The council made her induction public earlier this week, though Brown was told a few days earlier. She explained she found out on Friday after taking part in the Shellbrook rally organized by the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation.

“I thought it was a joke at first as I didn’t think I’d win,” Brown said.

In a press release, the P.A. Council of Women explained there were multiple reasons why Brown was the right choice to be inducted. This included her work as a teacher, with the Métis National Youth Advisory Council, and time spent volunteering.

“Jennifer’s commitment to the people in and around Prince Albert, the arts community, the academic community, and those members of our society who are marginalized make her an ideal inductee into the Prince Albert Women’s Hall of Fame,” said Chrissy Halliday, president of the council.

Brown’s job as a teacher is what really drives her. She explained she’s always trying to inspire her students to help others but also themselves.

“That’s the one thing I strive to instill in all my students, boys, girls, non-binary, however they choose to identify. The biggest goal I have as a teacher is ensuring they believe in themselves.”

Brown will officially be inducted on March 10.
