‘Don’t shave’: P.A.’s finest facial hair recognized during annual Beerd Derby

Feb 20, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Who has the best facial hair in the Prince Albert area?

That question was answered this weekend at the annual Winter Festival Beerd Derby held at the Prince Albert Wildlife Federation Banquet and Event Centre.

Contestants were split into eight categories: amateur and professional moustache, amateur and professional full bush, amateur and professional miscellaneous, ladies category, and PPE which involves people who can’t grow facial hair due to their job. The ladies and PPE categories were each done by a draw.

Kaleb Beauchesne won the best amateur moustache category. He told paNOW he was caught off-guard when his name was announced.

“I didn’t think [I’d win]; there were some good moustaches out there.”

He explained he’s had his moustache for only a couple of months. When asked for any tips, he said the best thing to do was stay patient.

“You gotta get through the uncomfortable period where you’re waiting for it to grow in,” he said.

Taking home the top spot for the professional full bush competition was Rick Jenkins, who’s been a part of the event for around 20 years.

He’s had the same beard for around the same amount of time. He also won this exact competition before.

He had a simple tip for those who want to grow a beard.

“Don’t shave.”

The other winners included Clair Urbaniak (ladies category), Shane LeCorre (PPE), Dwight Krauss (amateur full bush), Kent Tomlinson (professional miscellaneous), Dave MacAuley (professional moustache), and Wayne Gouldhawke (amateur miscellaneous).

Doug Erickson, chairman of the Beerd Derby, said the entire event was nothing short of a big success.

“It was only four years ago that we had 12 contestants and we’re up to over 130 now.”

He also noted there were several beards and moustaches he wished he could grow.

Meanwhile, the event was able to go ahead thanks to its sponsors Great Western Brewery, Phantom Light Distillery, Lake Country Co-op, Original Joe’s, Boston Pizza, PA Wand Wash, and North Star Trophies and Screenprinting.
