Bears’ Nowosad puts pen to paper, commits to Medicine Hat College

The Mann-Northway Northern Bears announced on Thursday that another graduating player from the club is heading into the next level.

Maci Nowosad became the third player from the Bears this season to commit to a post-secondary school as she will be heading to Medicine Hat College next year. She joins captain Julia Cey who is heading to the University of Prince Edward Island and Tristyn Endicott who committed to St. Thomas University in New Brunswick.

“I’m super excited to be advancing to the next level, continuing my hockey experiences, and moving to a new place and meeting new people,” said Nowosad.

She added that other schools from both Canada and the U.S. had sent her offers but chose Medicine Hat for a few key reasons.

“I really liked their coach when I was talking to him and they were the only school in Canada that I was talking to that had education, which was something I knew I wanted to go into,” she explained. “I also know a few people [in Medicine Hat] already and I thought it would be the best fit for me.”

Nowosad began her AAA tenure in the Battlefords with the Sharks where she spent two seasons scoring four goals and an assist in 58 games before moving to Prince Albert for her third and final year. This season with the Northern Bears, the Nipawin product has a single assist in 23 appearances.

“This is her third year in the league and her first year with us and she’s progressed with us,” said Northern Bears head coach Steve Young. “She’s someone who can give you some energy and plays a type of game that can be offence or defence. Both well-deserved and well-earned for her to be going on next year and we want to make sure she finishes the year strong with us.”

With this season being Nowosad’s only in Hockeytown North, she spoke highly of her time with the Black and Orange as well as her time in Prince Albert.

“My experience has been super good this year and it’s been a ton of fun. Definitely my best year in AAA.”

Nowosad and the Northern Bears are now gearing up to host the Swift Current Wildcats in an important weekend doubleheader as Prince Albert continues their push for the playoffs.

The Bears and Wildcats will battle in game one on Saturday night with a 7:00 puck drop while game two is slated for 1:30 on Sunday afternoon, both at the Art Hauser Centre.
