Mintos drop home-and-home weekend with Trojans

Feb 12, 2024 | 6:00 AM

The Prince Albert Mintos played twice this past weekend and came away with just a single point during their home-and-home series with the Tisdale Trojans.

Game one on Saturday saw the Mintos drop a close contest in overtime while at the Tisdale Recplex.

Entering the second tied 1-1, the Trojans were able to get the upper hand in the frame to lead P.A. 2-1 going into the third. Kale Margolis was able to tie it short-handed with less than seven minutes remaining in the game, but Simon Martin was able to cash in on the power play for Tisdale to reestablish the one-goal lead late.

However, it wouldn’t be later than Simon Garchinski’s marker who scored with 24 seconds left to force sudden death overtime. It didn’t take long to decide a winner in the extra frame as Dayton Reschny’s 19th of the season came just 36 seconds in to win it 4-3.

Also scoring for Prince Albert in the game was Will Whitter while Konnor Watson, Raydr Wallington, Abinet Klassen, and Taite Donkin managed to collect the assists.

In net for the Mintos was Josh Henry who managed 23 saves and collected the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Saturday)

Game two of the weekend set saw a rematch at the Art Hauser Centre that had a very similar result.

Jaxon Kehrig got the party started in the first for Tisdale while on the power play before Klassen was able to pull the Mintos back even a short time later.

Before the horn, however, Ryder Mucha tacked on another for the Trojans to give the visitors a 2-1 lead after one. Mucha added another 34 seconds into the frame to double the lead, which stayed that way until Owen Nelson scored to get one back for the Mintos as they remained behind by one entering the third.

The teetertottering continued as Reschny lit the lamp again for the second straight game to make it 4-2 with 10 to go. Not all hope was lost though, as Watson would go on to score for P.A. to make it a one-goal game.

Unfortunately, that’s as close as the Mintos would come as the Trojans managed to hang on for the 4-3 win.

Also finding the scoresheet for P.A. in the assist department was Whitter, Garchinski, Margolis, Kelan Simmonds, and Carter Cole while Brady Holtvogt tallied 18 saves and collected the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Sunday)

The pair of losses now have the Mintos sitting with a 21-13-5 record entering the final stretch.

P.A. looks to get back into the win column on Thursday night when they get set to host the Saskatoon Contacts for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop.
