Harry Palidwor
1936 – 2024
We are saddened to announce that our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend Harry Palidwor passed away on January 28, 2024 at the age of 87.
Dad was in the middle of the lineup of 7 other siblings. He was born in the family home in Prince Albert. He had 3 brothers and 4 sisters. An even 8. Grampa came from the old country and tried farming for a while but when times were tough started working for the railroad. So they were mostly raised in the green 2 story house on 9th street across from the midtown skating rink in PA. Dad later coached hockey there.
Dad met the love of his life Bonnie when they were yet teenagers and they were married in PA in 1956. They had a daughter, Kerri and 5 years later their son, Troy.
Dad loved cars and music and golf. In younger years he liked nothing better than getting together weekends with all the family and friends – as many as could fit into the little house. On Sundays we were always gathered together with all the aunts and uncles and cousins at grannies for homemade borscht or cabbage rolls or perogies. There was a pile of coats to the ceiling in the bedroom with a card game going on somewhere.
Dad worked as a sheet metal worker. He went to Moosejaw for training and worked for L & A Plumbing and Heating for over 20 years. After that he and Mom moved to Surrey, BC for several years and then back to Saskatchewan – Saskatoon for the last years of work before retirement.
He lived in a Condo on 8th street across from Circle Park Mall for over 20 years. He was caretaker/maintenance man there and was on the Condo association board. He didn’t take any guff that’s for sure. He also made sure the three 30’ spruce trees in front of his condo were all lit up at Christmas. Not sure how he managed that… and his apartment always looked like a show home. He was a pretty snappy dresser too. He was a regular at Sobies and Tomas the Cook restaurant down the block. Everyone knew him there. He enjoyed the coffee group every day at McDonalds. He was also pretty happy when he was able to barbeque on his balcony.
Dad always had to have the first gadget in cutting edge technology. The VCR with the long cord. The huge camcorder- Dad was always filming something or other, or taking pictures with the Nike camera with a tripod. He had the big megawatt sound system which weighed about two tons. Which he just recently parted with. He always had music playing in his apartment. Usually easy listening golden oldies or the golf channel – He had about 10 boxes of albums and probably over 1000 cd’s and cassette tapes.
Dad loved a game of golf and actually got a hole in one at Cook golf course in 1964. He still had the trophy displayed. And we are pretty sure that Bill, Fred, and Graydon have been waiting for him to complete their foursome on the most spectacular golf course imaginable.
Dad was pretty fussy with his vehicles. To name one, he had a 1963 Riviera with white leather remote seats with a 454 Wildcat motor. Something for back then. He also loved golfing with and going to car shows with Troy and Brooks and he knew the make and model of every car.
Dad had a soft spot for animals. He loved and spoilt all the family pets including his little companion, Tiki, who was his Siamese cat that lived to 18. He made sure the birds were all fed daily on his balcony. And if he could have he would have taken in all animals especially if they were in distress.
Unfortunately Mom passed away at age 64 so Dad was widowed young. He missed her terribly and talked about her until the end.
Dad was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2018. It is described as having dementia and Parkinson’s at the same time. He fought hard and managed to live independently until December 2022 when he was admitted to the Long Term Care facility in Shellbrook. Which we are very thankful for the care and empathy of all the staff there.
Dad always talked about how in his youth he would love to run free, barefoot in the fields with the feel of the wind in his face. After this last year of being confined and struggling with Lewy body he is finally free again to enjoy being with the love of his life and running through the fields of green.
We will miss you Dad.
He was predeceased by his wife Bonnie, recently his beautiful granddaughter Trianna, his parents Mary and Steve Palidwor, parents-in-law Charlotte (Chuck) and Ferd Johnson, his sisters Helen (Clarence) and Polly (Joe), brothers Bill (Joyce) and Fred, brother-in-law Graydon, sister-in-law Charlene McLean, nephew Jim Gariepy, nephew Brent Brittan, as well as many other good friends and coworkers – Les, Duffy, Bud, Mike, Joe, and John to name a few.
