The first viable, compostable net wrap for bales in agriculture has been introduced.

CNH invested in the Canadian start-up company Nature’s Net Wrap which created the ecofriendly bale storage.

In a news release, CNH said shifting to compostable net wraps has the potential to reduce landfill use, haulage and disposal costs, eliminate soil contamination, improve animal safety, and reduce the risk of water contamination, resulting in a reduction of approximately 2.5 million tons of plastic waste per year.

Balers from the New Holland Agriculture brand is producing all the bales in the testing phase.

The company said this would accelerate their mission to eliminate waste from the process of collecting and storing crops.

Lactanet Canada is making changes to its membership structure.

CanWest DHI, Canadian Dairy Network, and Valacta came together four years ago to form Lactanet, a new farmer-run national partnership of dairy cattle improvement organization.

The organization, which is focused on dairy cattle improvement in support of Canadian dairy farmers, will have Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) as the only member representing Ontario dairy farmers on its board.

Lactanet Board Chair Barbara Paquet said this is another step is the proposed amendment of its bylaws.

“In the 43 years since the formation of Ontario DHI in 1981, the number of licensed Ontario dairy herds has decreased by more than 80 per cent and farmer delegates felt it was simply time to adapt,” Paquet said.

For Ontario dairy farmers, this transition will mean that the 2024 Ontario DHI Annual Meeting held on Jan. 17 will be its last.

Changes for dairy farmers effective Jan. 1 include lactations reaching 280-days, where animals can receive projected BCA’s if they dry prior to 305-days – with actual production remaining.

Lactanet customers have the option of having lactations calculated with component sensor data shared with breed associations for inclusion on pedigree records.
