Opening Ceremonies

Viterra Scotties Curling Championships underway in Tisdale

Jan 18, 2024 | 1:38 PM

The 2024 Viterra Scotties began in the Town of Tisdale, as the community hosted the opening ceremonies Wednesday night to kick off the five-day event.

All 12 teams gathered on the altered sheet of ice, which normally hosts Tisdale Trojans hockey games, to be introduced to the local fans and begin their round-robin play.

“We’re feeling really good right now, we had a great turnout for the opening ceremonies, had lots of our junior curlers attend, as they carried in the team signs, and the players seem really happy with the facility here so far,” explained Co-Chair Lori Kidney.

Each team practiced earlier in the day, before the opening ceremonies, to get a feel for what they’ll call home, as they battle for the chance to represent their province.

The 12 teams have been split into two groups of six and will play each other once for a total of five round-robin games.

The top team from each group will then play on Saturday night, with the winner headed straight to the final.

As for the second-best team from each group, they will play to face the loser of the best-on-best game on Sunday morning, with the winner of that particular match headed to the final as well, on Sunday afternoon.

“They really appreciate the facility we have in Tisdale and I think we’re going to be looking at some great competition this week… it’s gonna be a pretty busy place here at the Rec Plex,” added Kidney.

“We’re working hard to make it a really great event and we’d love to invite people down to watch some curling… we are just really happy to see it started.”

So far two draws have already taken place, one Wednesday night and the other Thursday morning.

As it stands right now, there are three teams with a 2-0 record in Team Mitchell, Ackerman, and Martin, while Team Barker and Silvernagle are 1-1, and Team Englot, Anderson, Orsted, Selzer, Stevenson, and Tisdale are 0-1.

Draws will resume Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
