Mintos fall in final round robin contest to Shattuck-St. Mary’s

Dec 30, 2023 | 9:30 AM

The Prince Albert Mintos wrapped up their round robin games at the Circle K Classic in Calgary on Friday afternoon.

The Mintos were up against the USA’s number one ranked prep school, Shattuck-St. Mary’s (SSM) and started the contest off strong but things unraveled as the game rolled on.

SSM dominated on the scoreboard winning 12-3 which included a six goal second period.

All of Prince Albert’s markers came in the first with Will Whitter scoring twice and Owen Nelson potting his second of the tournament. Owen Dyck, Lincoln Rogers, and Kale Margolis collected the assists in the game.

For SSM, eight different skaters found the back of the net with William Zellers, Mikey Berchild, Ryker Lee, and Jackson Potulny each scoring twice while Shaun Rios, Vladimir Bakhtov, Austin Moline, and Drew Waterfield had one assist each.

Mintos netminders Brady Holtvogt and Josh Henry combined for 54 saves while on the opposite end of the ice, SSM goaltender Jackson Silverberg made 17 stops to help SSM clinch first in Pool B.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE

With their Pool B victory, SSM now moves onto the First Place playoff while the Mintos will battle in the Third Place playoff after placing third in the pool. Prince Albert will look to keep their tournament lives alive on Saturday afternoon when they face the Edmonton Jr. Oilers Orange in their Quarterfinal contest.

Edmonton placed third in Pool C after also finishing the round robin at 1-2. The Jr. Oilers managed to topple the Burlington Eagles 7-2 in their tournament opener, then fell 3-2 to the Phoenix Jr Coyotes on Thursday and lost again on Friday 8-3 to RHA Kelowna.

Puck drop for the do-or-die matchup is at 1:45 p.m. Sask. time.
