Viterra workers in Saskatchewan have voted to authorize strike action following an impasse in contract bargaining.

Members of the Grain and General Services Union Locals 1 and 2 have rejected the grain-handling company’s latest offer.

They represent workers at Viterra Country Operations and Maintenance and Viterra Regina’s head office.

The key issues include wages, work-life balance, health and safety and respect in the workplace.

United Farmers of Alberta have added a sixth location in Saskatchewan.

UFA turned on the pumps earlier this month at its new location in the Rural Municipality of Corman Park five kilometres northwest of Saskatoon on Highway 16.

UFA is a well-known entity in Alberta with more than 100 locations.

The co-operative has been expanding in Saskatchewan with facilities at Macklin, Kindersley, Swift Current, Yorkton, and Weyburn.

The Corman Park location features a cardlock, wide lines and high-speed pumps.

Researchers at UPEI are looking for new ways to produce hydrogen to replace fossil fuels and combat climate change.

One of those projects is working on extracting hydrogen from waste like sawdust and potato peels.

Assistant professor Yulin Hu said climate change is a big challenge, and one of many solutions to help the cause could be using everyday waste to produce hydrogen.

Hu said moving to PEI inspired her to look for local waste products, which includes potatoes and tunicate which is an invasive aquatic species that plagues the Island’s mussel industry.
