In a display of sheer talent and determination, two swimmers from the Prince Albert Sharks Swim Club made waves at the Prairie Winter International Swimming Championship 2023, held in Winnipeg from December 7 to December 10. Clara G. and Myla M., both representing the Sharks, showcased remarkable performances, leaving an indelible mark on the prestigious competition.

Clara G., a seasoned participant in the championship, demonstrated her prowess by securing not one but two bronze medals, a testament to her relentless efforts and dedication. In her first event on the opening day, Clara competed in the 1500-meter freestyle, delivering an extraordinary performance that saw her drop an impressive 42 seconds.

This achievement not only earned her a bronze medal but also marked an “AA” qualifying time for 15 and 16 & over girls.

Day two witnessed Clara’s excellence in the 400 Individual Medley, where she dropped an astounding 9 seconds to claim her second bronze medal. Her proficiency also earned her a spot in the 200-meter freestyle, where she reached the finals, finishing seventh.

The competition intensified on day three, with Clara taking on the challenging 100 backstroke. Despite narrowly missing the podium, she showcased her resilience by achieving a new personal best time and finishing fourth, just 0.43 milliseconds shy of the bronze medal.

In the 400 freestyle, Clara dropped 5 seconds in the prelims, securing an “AA” time for 15-year-old girls and a place in the finals.

The final day saw Clara compete in the 200-meter backstroke, where she dropped three seconds and finished fourth. In the fiercely competitive final, she dropped an additional two seconds, securing a commendable sixth place, narrowly missing the bronze medal by 0.77 milliseconds.

Clara wrapped up her outstanding performance with the 100-meter freestyle, qualifying for the finals. Myla M., who celebrated her 15th birthday just before the championship, showcased her potential in the 15 & over age group category.

As one of the youngest in this age group, Myla’s achievements were truly remarkable. She qualified in the 100-meter butterfly, dropping two seconds from prelims to finals and securing a fourth-place finish in final B. In the 200-meter butterfly, Myla claimed the ninth position, showcasing her versatility in various events. Notably, she achieved personal best times in the 200-meter Individual Medley and the 100-meter freestyle.

Head Coach Dr. Hazem Hussein expressed his pride in the Sharks swimmers, emphasizing the significance of the international championship in providing valuable experience.

He stated, “It was such a great opportunity for Sharks swimmers to compete in this high-level international swimming championship to gain more experience. We are pleased and very proud of our swimmers’ performance and look forward to more success and continuing development.”
