Prince Albert’s Sasha Malenfant played the role of overtime hero for Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon, helping the Hounds down the Mann-Northway Northern Bears 5-4 in double overtime.

The game-winning goal was the fourth point in the game for the former Northern Bear as she also tacked on three assists in her return to the Art Hauser Centre.

In the team’s first home game since Oct. 26, the Bears were trailing by two with less than three minutes to go and managed to claw their way back with goals from Bree Purcell and Tristyn Endicott to force overtime. Young was proud of his team for the no-quit effort they presented when their backs were against the wall.

“We could’ve easily said ‘Okay another loss, here we go’ but [we were in it] right until the end,” he said. “To get those two goals was crucial for us and unfortunately worked out the way it worked out.”

Purcell’s late-game goal was the third point of the game for her as she also had another goal and an assist, bringing her season totals to a career-high seven points on the season. Ella Clarke was the other scorer while Endicott, Caprice Harder, Marly Dumanski, Maci Nowosad, and Mikiya Anderson each had an assist in the game. Nikita Krayetski took the loss for the Bears in the contest, making 19 saves as P.A. falls to 2-8-0-2 on the campaign.

Along with Malenfant on the Hounds, Kate Williams had a pair of markers, Maisie Kozak had a goal and an assist, Spring Mosset had two helpers, Sara Harbus scored once, and both Sophia Banda and Eden Carius had one assist. In net for Notre Dame was Schay Camphaug who made 18 stops to help the Hounds improve to 5-5-2-0 on the year.

The Northern Bears are back in action on Dec. 16 at the Art Hauser Centre when the team hosts their 2nd annual Alumni game against the Saskatoon Stars.
