Raiders snap three game skid with shootout win over Broncos

The Prince Albert Raiders got their three-in-three weekend off on the right foot on Friday night, toppling the Swift Current Broncos 4-3 at the InnovationPlex.

The win comes after falling in their last three contests with their most recent coming to Moose Jaw last Saturday.

Prince Albert led the Broncos, who were rebranded as the Lake Diefenbaker Slough Sharks for the game, 2-1 heading into the final frame only for the home team to score twice and take the lead.

With less than 30 seconds to play, Sloan Stanick played hero for the Raiders and tied the game to force extras. In the shootout, it was Stanick again who this time gave the Raiders the lead leading to Josh Filmon with a chance to keep the game alive, however, P.A.’s netminder Chase Coward was able to shut the door and hold on for the win. He had 31 saves en route to the triumph, helping the Raiders improve to 14-12-0-2 on the campaign.

Along with Stanick, Prince Albert captain Eric Johnston and fellow blueliner Terrell Goldsmith also scored in the contest. Stanick potted an assist in the game with Aiden Oiring, Krzysztof Macias, and Justice Christensen also collecting an assist.

For Swift Current, Connor Hvidston, Brady Birnie, and Tyson Laventure were the goal scorers while Josh Fluker, Owen Pickering, Rylan Gould, Ryan McCleary, and Connor Gabriel were the assist getters.

Joey Rocha was between the pipes for the Broncos, making 42 stops as Swift Current falls to 13-11-1-1 on the year.

The Broncos got the party started in the first and it didn’t take them long to do it. Hvidston potted the opening marker just over a minute into the game to give Swift Current the early lead.

Fast forward to the second and the Raiders answer back. Johnston fed Stanick along the wall who then passed it back out to Johnston who was all alone in the slot, allowing him to fire home his third of the campaign to tie it up.

Not too long later, a Raiders point shot was blocked by a Broncos defender before Goldsmith was able to get a hold of the puck and fire it at the net. Rocha managed to get a piece of the shot, however, he didn’t get enough as the puck squeaked through the pads and over the goal line to give Prince Albert the lead, which they would carry into the third period.

Things began to unravel for the Green and Gold in the third as Swift Current pulled the game back to even before a familiar face gave the Broncos the lead. Birnie tied the game less the two minutes in while midway through the period, Laventure put S.C. in front with his 11th of the year.

In desperation, the Raiders pulled Coward in the final moments and it paid off. With 25 seconds remaining, Stanick managed to gain possession of the net and went upstairs on a sprawling Rocha to force overtime.

When the extra period solved nothing, the game was decided with a shootout.

In the third round with no score, Stanick scored to put the Raiders up leaving the game on the tape of Josh Filmon. The Broncos assistant captain faked the backhand and switched to his forehand last second, however, Coward was able to get across and shut down the equalizing attempt to secure the two-points against his hometown team.

Continuing on with their three-in-three weekend, the Raiders will now travel to Medicine Hat to face the Tigers in their first meeting of the season. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CST.
