A professional engineer in Prince Albert was recently recognized for his work helping people starting in the industry.

Earlier this month, Russ Clunie Sr. was presented with the 2023 Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Saskatchewan (ACEC-SK) Mentor Award.

Clunie has been in the industry for 63 years and is currently the owner of Clunie Consulting Engineers Ltd.

He told paNOW he considers mentoring one of the more rewarding parts of his job.

“Young people don’t have the experience I got, you have to teach them the right way or (at least) try to.”

Clunie joked that someone has to do it and it might as well be him as he has most of the experience. The lack of support when he first started is also why he has a strong desire to help others.

Six people ended up nominating him for the award. This included Gord Broda and two of his sons.

“He has a strong message to deliver but delivers it in a very direct (and) efficient way. People absorb the information; they’re not scared to ask questions,” said Broda in a video produced by ACEC -SK.

His son Russ Jr. also provided his thoughts about his dad’s teaching style.

“He provides you with enough and expects you to go out and deliver,” he said.

Meanwhile, Clunie was given a plaque containing all the past winners of the award. As soon as next year’s winner is announced, he’ll be asked to give it back.
