LLRIB announced as host for 2024 Tony Cote Summer Games

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) has been selected to host the Tony Cote Summer Games in August 2024.

The community will host hundreds of Indigenous youth who will be competing in a variety of events, including athletics, archery, canoe/kayaking, beach volleyball, golf, soccer, and softball.

Kevin Roberts, Director of Sports and Recreation with the LLRIB, said that the band is already putting the games together despite the short notice.

“We’re very excited – very confident we can deliver and put on the games in such short notice,” he said. “We’ve [hosted] it before back in 2001, we organized the First Nations Summer Games in a matter of six months. Since then, our community has grown significantly in terms of facility development so I think we’ll host another good edition of the games.”

From the announcement earlier this week to the opening ceremonies in the summer, the organizers have less than nine months to prepare for the games. Thankfully, Roberts said he already has the experience with setting up the games.

“I was involved with the 2001 games so I have a lot of insight and I’ve also been involved with our athletes going to all the games since then,” he said. “Our first goal is to create our organization, we have a good idea of how we’re going to do that and from there, we’ll start seeking out our sponsors. We know what it takes to host this event and we’re excited.”

He added that facility development is underway in the community with land already being cleared. Additionally, he said that renovations to existing facilities will be made once the snow melts in the spring.

The games are scheduled to be played from August 3-10.
