Guess who’s coming for dinner?

David Mulgrew describes the latest offering from Odyssey Productions as a comedy of affairs.

Their adaptation of the Tony Award winning play, “Don’t Dress for Dinner”, runs next week at Prince Albert’s Plaza 88. And Mulgrew, who has directed about 10 plays, including two for Odyssey, told paNOW he really enjoyed the script.

“I love farce and it’s so well written. It’s very, very witty,” he explained. “You know we’ve heard of comedy of errors, I’d call this a comedy of affairs’

The story centres around a man who is planning a romantic weekend with his mistress, while his wife is away. He has arranged for a cook to prepare gourmet delights and has even invited his best friend to tag along, to provide the alibi.

While the plan appears fool proof, a few twists occur and in simplest form, everything becomes unravelled.

“It’s just like one affair to another, lies to cover lies,” Mulgrew said.

Chantelle Hovdebo, who brings a wealth of experience to the stage, plays the mistress Suzanne.

“I’ve never really done a farce before so it’s really fun. My character, like many of the last ones I’ve played, are nothing like me in real life,” she laughed.

“Everyone needs a really good laugh once in awhile and you will definitely get that with this play.”

Rehearsals started in early September and Hovdebo stated the cast has been a really good chemistry, both on and off the stage.

“We’ve worked very hard and we are very excited to put it on,” she said.

Stage manager Shona Tretiak described the play as very fast-moving, leaving no time for audience members to ever feel bored.

“There’s so much going on with the different characters and it’s just a lot of fun,” she said.

The first show is on Wednesday, Nov. 15 and tickets are $30.

The remaining shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday are part of a dinner theatre and tickets are $60. All tickers can be purchased through the Odyssey website.
