Star Diamond officially names own diamonds using Cree word

Oct 31, 2023 | 4:07 PM

The Name Our Diamonds contest from Star Diamond Corporation has concluded and the company has its winner.

Kīwētin is the winning brand name. It’s derived from the Cree language and translates into “north wind.” The name is symbolic for the Fort a la Corne project area and surrounding Indigenous lands located in Northern Saskatchewan.

According to a news release from the company, the name reflects the climate of the area, characterized by strong northern winds.

“We are excited about the further potential of the Fort a la Corne project and now that we have our own diamond brand, Kīwētin, we are confident that this diamond brand will be seen globally as the hallmark for high purity, conflict-free Canadian Diamonds,” said Ewan Mason, the interim president and CEO of Star Diamond.

“We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who participated in our naming contest and to Amy P. (formerly of Saskatoon) for her winning submission. The next year will be very busy while we advance this massive project for the benefit of our shareholders and bring economic benefits to all people of the Province of Saskatchewan.”

The trademark application for Kīwētin Diamonds is already down.

The contest launched on Oct. 11 and the company says it received over 1,000 submissions for names.
