Spooktacular weekend planned in Birch Hills

Local businesses in Birch Hills are coming together this weekend to help spread some screams and also support some local causes.

Special Halloween attractions have been planned at both Rosy’s KG Bar and Grill and at the town’s museum.

This year marks the second year the bar and grill has hosted a haunted hotel. The entire upper floor has undergone a supernatural transformation, and each room is decorated with a different theme. Owner Rosa Matice told paNOW she just loves Halloween.

“If we could have Halloween every day, I would do it,” she said.

Funds raised from this weekend’s events will go towards putting on a free Christmas dinner for the community on Dec. 23. Noting the terror that lurks on the upper floor of her bar, Matice explained the work began about three months ago and she has spent thousands of dollars on decorations that include animated dolls and figures from popular movies.

Brave guests who ventured to the building last year will be pleased to know there’s a whole new set of thrills. Annabella Wiseman, came from Ontario two months ago and has been helping with set-up.

“I’ve had such a great time with great people,” she said. “We’ve had so much fun up there”

Darlene Markowski helped out last year and has again donated a number of items.

“All the stuff up there, there’s not enough room at my place so it’s perfect up here,” she explained. “It’s Halloween, come and have a great scare.”

The Haunted Hotel attraction, which carries a $5 entry fee, runs Friday and Saturday nights from 6-10 p.m. and then again on Tuesday. There is also a dance for the adults on Saturday night.

Down the road, another nightmare awaits curious eyes. The Birch Hills Dance Centre has been given permission to transform the community’s museum into a Haunted Hospital. Erica Cochrane, is the studio’s co-owner and acknowledged they will have live actors prowling the building.

“And the building is just kinda scary on its own,” she said.

And for those who are perhaps feeling a bit timid, there’s also games and fun activities being held at the nearby dance studio. Cochrane explained the money they raise on Saturday will go towards sending local dancers to a competition in New York in November, 2024.

“We’ve got probably about 15 students who will be going”, she said, adding they have about 20 to 30 volunteers helping out this weekend.

She also noted that since the museum board was so generous, they plan to give some money back to them as well to help with planned roof repairs.
