It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Hazel McLean, late of Big River, SK on October 5th, 2023, at the Big River Health Centre at the age of 93 years.
Hazel was born on Friday, February 28th, 1930, to Henry & Helen Woods in Rosetown, SK. Hazel was the oldest of five children. She worked hard on the farm, milking 15 cows morning and evening. Hazel moved to Saskatoon with one of her sisters and worked at a Dairy Factory. After that Hazel lived in Milestone, SK, Brandon, MB, Reston, MB, and then Big River SK. In Big River, Hazel was instrumental in helping to put in the plumbing and heating for the community.
Hazel’s life was full. She enjoyed knitting, riding motorcycle, baking for the farmer’s market, singing (she had a guitar and sang in a band as a teenager), gardening, picking wild berries, going on weekend (and longer) trips with family, attending the Evangelical Free Church Service faithfully in the home until COVID, reading (especially the Senior’s Paper), playing games (whist, canasta, cribbage, checkers), flowers (especially the tiger lily, it was her favorite), and acting in a variety of venues.
Hazel was a world traveler – she went on many Motorcycle Retread Rallies in Canada and the USA. Hazel traveled to Istanbul, Turkey (due to a plumbing and heating promotion), traveled across Canada from the Yukon Territories to the Maritime Provinces, and then into the USA where she and her life partner wintered in Arizona for several years. Hazel’s greatest love was her children, and she often said she loved them all equally. Hazel will be deeply missed by all.
Hazel will be lovingly remembered by her children Stuart (Therese) McLean & family; Terri Leah Myshynuik & family; Shelley McLean; & Russell (Margo) McLean & family; her sister Helen Bechtel; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please donate in Hazel’s Memory to the Big River Health Centre, 220 1st Avenue North, Big River, SK, S0J 0E0. A Memorial Service will be held for Hazel on Saturday, October 14th, at 2:00 PM at the Big River Legion #136 Hall, Big River, SK. Condolences can be sent to the family on our website at www.mackenziechapel.ca. Arrangements in care of MacKenzie Chapel & Crematorium. Brian & Bev Stobbs, Mark Gyoerick – Mel Curle. 306.763.8488.
