At the conclusion of his sentencing hearing, a man who pled guilty to possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking was told by a Court of King’s Bench justice that if he was serious about being a better father to his children, then he needed to change his lifestyle.

Wolfgang McKenzie, 35, received a sentence of 2.5 years for an incident that happened in La Ronge on June 22, 2022.

McKenzie was the driver of a vehicle pulled over by police. Inside the vehicle, police found over 400 grams of cocaine, including 1.35 grams tucked inside McKenzie’s sock.

A loaded handgun, drug trafficking paraphernalia, cell phones and a digital scale were also seized along with over $260 cash.

McKenzie was one of five people arrested. During Friday’s hearing at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert, Crown Prosecutor Gregory Lyndon noted charges have been stayed for two of the individuals and the other two have pending court dates.

With respect to motive, McKenzie’s lawyer Susan Ryan explained he’s known as the guy to call if someone needs a ride for these types of situations. McKenzie also acknowledged he has an addiction to cocaine.

Also in her submissions, Ryan also noted McKenzie’s father has been in jail for all of his son’s life, and McKenzie himself has seven children.

She added that, unlike his father, McKenzie wants to be in his kids’ lives and has indicated plans to start on a positive path including counselling and finishing his grade 12.

With credit for time spent in remand, McKenzie has roughly one year and four months left to serve. He’s also prohibited for life from owning or possessing any guns or explosives.
