Ranch Erhlo gets permit to start care home for children in P.A.

Sep 26, 2023 | 8:56 AM

A residential care home that will allow Ranch Erhlo to care for six children ages six and younger in Prince Albert passed one major hurdle on Monday as council approved their development permit.

Councillor Tony Head explained to council that the community did not raise any concerns over the development permit.

“I’m really happy that Ranch Ehrlo was able to find an appropriate place in our community. I didn’t hear from any residents in our ward contesting this application, so happy they found a home here,” Head stated.

The home will be located at 724 8th Street East and provide care for up to six children at a time.

Staff from Ranch Erhlo went around the community after submitting the development permit and explained what they planned for the neighbourhood. The proposal was ‘well-received’ by the area.

No one showed up for a public meeting ahead of time and no letters or calls were raised to staff.

Until now, the Ranch has kept most of its operations in the RM of Buckland northwest of Prince Albert but also operates a group home for older youth on River Street.

The children in the new home will range in age from newborn to six years old but in some rare instances could go up to 11 years old.

Two staff provide care in 12-hour shifts starting in the morning, a houseparent will also be onsite to cook, clean and “create a welcome living space”. A fourth caregiver works overnight.

The program is not new as it has been operating in the RM of Buckland since 2018 but being inside the city is more convenient for medical appointments, school and amenities.
