For the second straight year, a team from Saskatoon has won Canada Soccer’s Western Masters Regional Championship.

St. Mary High School Principal Dwayne Gareau plays as a midfielder with the team and noting the tournament was held in Saskatoon, told paNOW there was a definite feeling of pressure to play well.

“We knew that’d be probably be the favourites, seeing as how we won it last year, so we just wanted to come out and play well and were hoping the results would follow,” he said.

And play well they did. Following a 6-1 win over the Calgary Crew, Gareau faced the Manitoba Bandits and won 4-1. In the final, the Saskatoon squad played BC Inter EDC and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

However based on total points, the YXE FC was declared the winner. As Gareau was the lone Prince Albert player on the team, he said anytime you can compete at one of these competitions, and represent your community it’s a good feeling.

Gareau also acknowledged how well the tournament was run and thanked all the volunteers.
