A steal of four in the second end proved too much to overcome for the Robyn Silvernagle rink who dropped an 8-3 decision Sunday to Sherry Anderson in the championship game at the Great Western Brewery Curling Bonspiel played in Saskatoon.

Despite the second-place finish, Silvernagle said that her new-look foursome who represent the Twin Rivers Curling Club of North Battleford, performed well in their first full weekend of competition.

“Overall, for our first weekend on the ice curling competitively, we were happy with our performance,” Silvernagle told battlefordsNOW. “We now can take things from this weekend to work on in our practices and get better.”

The Silvernagle crew opened the tournament with decisive wins over Sherry Just of Saskatoon (7-1) and an 11-4 win over Regina’s Mandy Selzer before dropping their last game of the round-robin to Sherry Anderson rink 5-3. Her team then advanced to the championship game with a 6-2 win over Penny Barker of Moose Jaw in the quarterfinals, then edged Amber Holland 6-4 in the semifinals.

In the championship draw, Silvernagle looked for a measure of revenge against Anderson, however, the crafty veteran jumped to a quick 5-0 lead in the first two ends and never looked back.

“We just had a tough second end and it got us behind the eight-ball,” the NB skip said. “Sherry’s (Anderson) team played well and didn’t give us many chances to get back into the contest.”

Now that the 2023-24 curling season is officially underway the Silvernagle foursome, of (lead) Kara Thevenot, Chaelynn Kitz (second) and (third) Kelly Schafer, are looking to repeat as the Team Saskatchewan provincial champion and represent the province at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in February in Calgary for a fourth time.
