COATES, Deryl Keith
1953 – 2023
Deryl Keith Coates passed away Thursday, September 21, 2023, at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina, with his wife and children at his side. He was born February 3, 1953 in Kamloops, the last child of Wilfred and Hilda (Lofstrom) Coates. He grew up in the Silent Call district, attending a one-room schoolhouse for the first three years of his education. He completed his education in Debden, Canwood and Regina. He and his family worked hard on his parents’ farm and enjoyed the close-knit community around them. He made life-long friends, and always valued his neighbours.
Deryl married Laura Boyle in Canwood in 1971 and they moved to Regina to find work. Deryl started out at a Primco warehouse and after a back injury, began his 35-year career with Workers’ Compensation Board. The Board became the centre of his social life as he participated with his colleagues in many sports – bowling, curling, fastball, table tennis, hockey, volleyball, golf – and all the events that came with that. His fastball pitching lead him to the Goldridge Gophers and a new community of friends based in Bethune. His children, Amanda and Brandon, became equally busy people, so Deryl formed another group of friends of the sports parents he met. Weekends away for tournaments were always good fun. After Deryl retired from the Board, he moved to Realty Executives White and enjoyed his work as a realtor for 10 years, meeting even more great people.
Deryl and his family always enjoyed music, so his guitar was never far away. His jam session buddies – often family members – were a joy to him and his guide to learning more music. Both Deryl and Laura had large, extended families so there were many opportunities to travel to attend reunions, weddings and just visit and tour. Deryl particularly enjoyed the winters away in warmer places than Regina. The joy of his life was his children and their children. He was a loyal fan of anything they did. Every one of them brought a smile to his face and great pride and delight.
Deryl was predeceased by his parents Wilfred and Hilda Coates of Canwood; his brother Leroy Coates of Watrous; his sister and her husband, Ilene and Ed Roy of Regina; his father-in-law, Walter Boyle; his sister-in-law, Lorette Coates; and his brothers-in-law Einar Hamborg, Ken Odegaard, Jefferey Boyle and Harvey Nelson. Along with his wife of 52 years, Laura Coates, he will be sadly missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Darren Carter and their children Roan, Rhys, and Fynlea Carter; and his son and daughter-in-law Brandon and Dina Coates and their children Jacob Nathanail, Jessica Nathanail and her daughter Violette, and Athena, Petra, and Y.B. Coates. Also surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Doris Odegaard and Lorring Nordquist of Canwood; his brother Rod Coates of Westlock; his sister-in-law Marlene Coates of Watrous; his mother-in-law, Maxine Boyle of Regina; his sisters-in-law Barb Boyle, Diana Nelson, Donna Boyle and Darla Boyle; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many good friends.
His family wishes to thank Dr. Filomeno, Dr. Vizhul, the Allan Blair Cancer Centre and the Pasqua Hospital staff on ward 4D for their support and care. Special appreciation is extended to the staff of Pasqua Hospital palliative care ward 3A for their kindness, helpfulness, and care.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Turvey Centre, 100 Armour Road, Highway 6 North, Regina on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. A private family interment will be held at a later date. To leave an online message of condolence, please visit https://www.speersfuneralchapel.com/
