The Prince Albert Raiders scored twice in the third period to rally past the Saskatoon Blades 4-3 Saturday night in WHL pre-season action at the Art Hauser Centre.

Trailing 3-2 going into the third period, Niall Crocker scored his second goal of the night to tie the game at 3-3 before Harrison Lodewyk scored the game winner with under five minutes to go in regulation.

The Raiders are now 2-0 in pre-season play with both wins coming against Saskatoon.

“I like these types of games,” said Raiders Head Coach Jeff Truitt. “They’re tight-checking, they’re competitive, it brings out the best in positional play and individual effort and things like that.”

Truitt was also impressed with his veteran goaltender Chase Coward, who made 28 saves in his first start wearing a Raiders uniform.

“Very under control, he looked like a 20-year-old out there,” Truitt said. “He commanded the crease, he anticipated plays, he was strong when the traffic came in tight on him and he held his ground. That’s what you’re looking for…real impressed.”

Reigning WHL Rookie of the Year Ryder Ritchie also scored for Prince Albert, while Tyler Parr, Egor Sidorov, and Charlie Wright were the goal scorers for Saskatoon. Blades netminder Austin Elliott made 17 saves in a losing effort.

Crocker said it’s always nice to beat your rival, especially at home.

“I know it’s just pre-season, but pre-season leads right into the regular season, so it’s obviously big games for us and it’s always awesome to beat Saskatoon in our building,” Crocker said.

Truitt said he wants to see more shot blocking from his group as the pre-season rolls on.

“We’ve got to be able to pay a price…it’s something that we’ve got to do,” he said. “You have to commit to it. You can’t tell me that you can’t block a shot…it’s whether or not you want to.”

Prince Albert hosts Regina Friday night in the third of four pre-season games.
