Inflation hits Canada’s prisons, inmates receive support to pay for canteen items

The high cost of living has affected households across the country, and that does not exclude the inmates serving time at the country’s federal institutions.

Responding to an information request from paNOW, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) confirmed an increase to canteen limits for all offenders from $90 to $120 per 14 days.

“It is being adjusted given inflation, affecting the prices of canteen items. This is not a pay increase,” the CSC stated.

The change takes effect during the next canteen cycle following Sept. 11 and is part of a number of adjustments to inmate transfer and savings limits to assist with an offender’s reintegration.

This includes the indefinite waiving of deductions for food, accommodation, and the Inmate Telephone System. The change had first been implemented at the beginning of the pandemic.

The annual transfer limit from an inmate’s savings account to their current account will be permanently increased from $750 to $850.
