Calling off the Attack: SAFLL cancels upcoming U15 and U17 field lacrosse seasons

Sep 8, 2023 | 2:00 PM

The Saskatchewan ‘A’ Field Lacrosse League (SAFLL) has made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming season in both the U15 and U17 divisions.

The league took to Facebook to announce the disappointing news, citing lack of participation as the reason for the cancellations.

Head coach of the U17 Prince Albert Attack Matt Robin said that the news was a tough pill to swallow as they had a team and were ready to play.

“It’s pretty tough, there was [a number] of kids who wanted to play,” he explained. “We were a little tight to try to get a team together but we were able to find enough bodies and get athletes to participate. Unfortunately, the other areas were having problems so we just decided to suspend the season this year and look at fixing it for next year.”

In the post, the league said that they were eagerly looking forward to the upcoming season and remain hopeful that next season will go on as planned.

“The league’s primary concern has always been the quality of play and enjoyment of its players,” the post read. “The decision to cancel the 2023 season was made after careful consideration of the limited participation levels, which did not meet the league’s requirements for a successful and competitive season.”

“While the 2023 season may not proceed as planned, SAFLL remains committed to fostering the growth of field lacrosse in the province. The league is already looking forward to revisiting its efforts and planning for an exciting return in 2024. SAFLL will use this hiatus as an opportunity to regroup, strategize, and ensure that the 2024 season is a resounding success.”

As for the players in Prince Albert, Robin hinted at the possibility of winter camps, indoor tournaments, and even a possible tournament for a new style of lacrosse called ‘Sixes’.

“This new version is essentially a box [lacrosse] and field combination with a bunch of rule changes so we’re looking to implement that into a tournament for field. We’re still trying to figure out all of the details, but it’s going to be a field tournament called Sixes which is new to the province,” said Robin.

He added that all the details of the tournament are still in the works, including its location and how many age groups will be participating.
