Ukrainian community in P.A. celebrates Independence Day

As war continues to ravage their homeland, thousands of Ukrainians who call Prince Albert home celebrated their country’s Independence Day.

The ceremonies took place on Aug. 24 at Prince Albert’s Memorial Square, which was temporarily named Ukrainian Independence Square as per a city proclamation.

Krystina Tulchynska was one of the first Ukrainian newcomers to come to Prince Albert after the war started and took part in the Independence Day events. Tulchynska said the weather may have deterred some people from attending the outdoor festivities but it was still well attended.

Tulchynska took some time to talk more about Prince Albert and the welcoming spirit it provides for Ukrainian families. She said the large of Ukrainian nationals making their home in Prince Albert is making the community quite famous.

“When people Google Canada or try to find out some information about Canada, what they see is big towns. Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and others,” she said. “Who ever heard about Prince Albert? There is a great small town in Saskatchewan and we made this town famous.”

Aside from the Ukrainian community coming together for the Independence Day events, several dignitaries including members of City Council and MP Randy Hoback were in attendance.

Hoback said he continues to talk about Ukraine in his travels and meeting different diplomats.

City Councillor Dennis Ogrodnick was also in attendance and confirmed that the City of Prince Albert said the Ukrainian flag will continue to fly in Memorial Square until the war and invasion ends.
