Prairie Dogs set to open new SFLL season on home field

Aug 23, 2023 | 2:00 PM

The Prince Albert Prairie Dogs are ready to begin the new Saskatchewan Field Lacrosse League (SFLL) season on home field this Saturday.

All six of the league’s teams will be in action at Max Clunie Park, with P.A. kicking off the new season against Sturgis 9-1-1. Prairie Dogs head coach Matt Robin said the team is eager to get the show on the road following the long offseason.

“It’s exciting to be able to open up the season in your hometown,” he said. “The guys are really looking forward to this. We have a couple new players joining and we still have the same old vets who keep coming back – this is our third year in the league but in previous years, we’ve shown that we can matchup with any of the cities.”

Last season ended in heartbreak for Prince Albert when they fell in the Harvest Cup final 8-7 to Sturgis. The championship would have been the second consecutive for the Prairie Dogs as they won it all in their inaugural 2021 season.

With the opening game of the 2023 season being a rematch of last year’s finals, Robin said that it’ll be interesting to see how the game will play out.

“They could have a couple new guys as well, some of the same old guys,” he said. “I know our guys have been practicing, getting their sticks moving through the hands and getting used to the field program because it has been so long for some of these guys. It’s been almost a full year since we played so practicing and getting out there and throwing the ball.”

Game one of the new SFLL season happens in Prince Albert at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. That’s not the only game P.A. will play in though as they’re slated to play again that same day at 7 p.m. against the Saskatoon Plainsmen. A full season schedule can be found by clicking here.
