Email scam prompts warning from SaskPower

Aug 9, 2023 | 4:17 PM

SaskPower is warning customers about an email scam making the rounds.

According to the Crown corporation, an email that appears to have been sent by MySaskPower says the customer has an unpaid bill. The email demands immediate payment and threatens that the customer will have their power disconnected if they don’t pay.

“The email also has links encouraging customers to log into their MySaskPower account or to submit a credit card payment online,” SaskPower said in a media release. “These links direct customers to external websites aimed at obtaining personal and credit card information.”

Anyone who has clicked on one of the links and given their credit card information should report it to their card issuer immediately, SaskPower said.

The company also offered tips for customers to identify scams:

  • Always double-check the sender’s email address; the display name may look legitimate, but the email address should be from @saskpower.com;
  • SaskPower does not threaten disconnection through an email for non-payment;
  • SaskPower will never ask for payment via e-transfer, gift cards, or bitcoin;
  • When in doubt, call SaskPower Customer Care at 1-888-757-6937 to confirm the email is legitimate.
