Whether it’s learning to use a compass for the first time or making crafts from local plants, almost 100 kids from Prince Albert were given a chance to connect with nature.

On Thursday, the City of Prince Albert and Wildernook Fresh Air Learning from Saskatoon hosted a Playground Program Day Camp at Little Red River Park.

This is the third year the program has been held and Director Claire Miller says each year has seen a big demand.

“We started in the pandemic and so it’s just really improved and grown in size because we had a lot of limitations in the beginning,” she said. “The last year and this year have about 100 registered.”

Miller said the program does change year after year, depending on the feedback they receive from participants and the camp leaders.

This year, she said the focus was on getting kids outdoors and really connecting them to the natural wonders in their city.

“Little Red is such a great spot,” she said. “So, we want to get the kids of Prince Albert out here to have a day playing, connecting to nature, learning and so it’s really letting them be kids and being outside playing and learning in nature.”

Among the highlights for this year were teaching kids how to use a compass and create their own obstacle courses using slack lines and the trees around them, as well as learning about the different plants they

“They’re learning about plants and medicinal uses for plants from Elder Liz Settee and they’re harvesting some willow, we’re doing it sustainably, and they’re making an artistic craft of their choice.”

Miller was extremely grateful for the support of The City of Prince Albert, Sask. Lotteries and the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) because without their help, camps like this one would not happen.
