Cargill has partnered with TREES Consulting to develop a Gold Standard-approved methane emissions reduction practice for beef producers.

This will help beef producers better understand the impact of feed supplements to measure and quantify the reduction of methane emissions.

Gold Standard’s certification process allows climate and sustainable development initiatives to manage and maximize their impacts toward climate security and requires verifiable impact toward three or more of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Cargill’s global ruminant sustainability lead Joanne Sharpe said the industry is looking for more accurate tools to measure methane reduction.

“As producers look at their current levels of production efficiency and work toward sustainability goals, we are committed to finding ways to ensure they can be recognized and rewarded for their efforts,” Sharpe said in a news release. “As part of our methane reduction priorities, this methodology is a key step toward opening new possibilities to reduce GHG emissions in the beef supply chain.”

Projects using the new methodology would first establish a baseline for emissions during “business as usual” activities for a minimum of three continuous years.

The project crediting period is set at five years and can be renewed for an additional five years, excluding the baseline years.

Kyle Larkin has been named the new Executive Director of the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC).

Larkin brings extensive advocacy, political and association experience to the organization.

GGC Chair Andre Harpe said Larkin is the ideal leader to navigate the shifting political and regulatory climate. His appointment comes at a critical stage, as the Canadian grains sector faces a rapidly evolving political and regulatory landscape.

“Kyle is the right person to help us seize these opportunities,” Harpe said. “His track record of driving impactful results, as well as his impressive experience in politics and strategic direction, will further strengthen GGC’s position as a leader in the industry.”

Prior to joining the GGC, Larkin served as Vice-President at Impact Public Affairs, a national full-service public affairs firm. Prior to this, he held key positions in various offices on Parliament Hill, including with the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.

The Manitoba and federal governments are contributing $1 million to support training and resource development for the agriculture sector.

The Sustainable CAP Industry Development Initiatives program was designed to meet the needs of organizations that support the agriculture and food sectors, including industry organizations, associations, commissions, non-profits, boards and Indigenous governments, communities, or organizations.

Eligible groups can receive up to $25,000 per organization over the duration of the program.

Direct Farm Manitoba executive director Kristie Beynon said the annual Direct Farm Marketing Conference brings together fruit and vegetable growers, livestock producers and other direct marketers from across the province to network and learn.

“The funding Direct Farm Manitoba has received through previous agricultural partnerships has been vital to the success of the conference, the only event of its kind in Manitoba,” Beyon said. “We look forward to working with Manitoba Agriculture again on this annual event, and appreciate the options introduced in the Sustainable CAP to better serve smaller organizations.”
