Disaster relief possible following June storms

Residents of Prince Albert could get some extra help with property damage following some heavy rainfalls and hail this summer.

City council voted in favour of applying for the Provincial Disaster Relief Program, which can also open the door for residents to apply.

“We sure wanted to make sure we got this in so we could open that up as a potential avenue for residents to get some assistance,” acting director of public works, Jeff Da Silva, said.

The city is aware of 20 properties that were damaged in the three storms with differing amounts and type of damage.

The rainfalls in question fell on June 1, June 5 and June 25 of this year.

Public Works staff are still figuring out the process for applicants to take but wanted to get the ball rolling on the program.

The province approached city staff not long before the Monday July 10 meeting and suggested they apply for the program.

Details from the province also need to be finalized before the city can determine how to proceed.

On July 1, another storm swept through Prince Albert with limited damage but went on to Nipawin 130 km northeast where it snapped or uprooted over 300 trees throughout the community.

The town is also planning to apply for disaster relief.
