Carlton Trail College launches healthcare focused tuition promotion

Carlton Trail College (CTC) is seeking out more students to join their continuing care assistant (CCA) program and pursue a career in healthcare.

The institution has launched a win-your-tuition promotion, with those who have already applied or will apply to the program by July 15, considered eligible.

The CCA programs start in September and are offered at the college’s Humboldt, Punnichy, Wakaw, and Wynyard learning locations.

“As part of the post-secondary sector in Saskatchewan, we’re committed to training future healthcare professionals,” said Deanna Gaetz, CTC business and skills training director. “One of those urgent needs is for continuing care assistants, which the province continues to identify through its Health Human Resources Action Plan.”

Continuing care assistants help people in various healthcare environments such as nursing homes, long-term care homes, retirement homes, client homes or hospitals.

CCA’s are listed in the top five occupations in Saskatchewan, based on highest job vacancies.

“Health care continues to be a significant focus within Saskatchewan and within our region, and continuing care assistants have been recognized as an occupation that needs a tremendous amount of individuals,” added Jennifer Brooks, advancement and external affairs director.

“With the Government of Saskatchewan’s earlier announcement of expanded seats in continuing care system programs, we want to ensure that individuals consider this as a valid career path and a positive entryway into health care within our province.”

Students will study gerontology, dementia management, promoting independence, administering personal care, medication monitoring, and more.

They will also receive Standard First Aid/CPR C/AED training or equivalent WHMIS training, and participate in a clinical work experience.

“The objective of wi your tuition is to hopefully take that financial pressure off of students to come and take the additional training that’s required to enter into this program. The tuition costs along with books and fees can sometimes be a financial barrier and we don’t want that to necessarily be the case,” Brooks explained.

“There’s always options for students to consider, such as financial aid or other types of student awards, and promotions. This win your tuition promotion for the CCA program is just another way we can hopefully help one fortunate individual into into our programs at Carlton Trail College.”

All eligible applications will entered into a random draw, with the successful student recipient being confirmed in August.

The program is roughly 32 weeks long and students will need a grade 12 and/or successful completion of 15 post-secondary credits from a recognized institution, along with an english language requirement to apply.
