Rancourt chosen as NDP candidate for Prince Albert – Northcote

People voting in next year’s provincial election in Prince Albert – Northcote will see a familiar name representing the NDP.

Nicole Rancourt, who served as the riding’s MLA from 2016 to 2020, was chosen to be the nominee once again at a meeting Thursday evening at the Mann Art Gallery.

Though she was the only one to put her name forward, those in attendance were quite excited to have Rancourt back. This included Sask. NDP Leader Carla Beck.

“This is someone who didn’t take a break from serving people because she wasn’t successful in the last election,” said Beck. “I’ve (personally) seen her work on behalf of the people of Prince Albert.”

Rancourt told paNOW she continues to receive a lot of calls and messages from people in the riding asking for help.

“(Recently) I got a Facebook message from someone indicating that they were struggling with some post-secondary issues and how I could help and support them,” she said.

This was one of the reasons why she wanted to get back into politics. However, Rancourt explained that the main driver was all the people she currently works with as a social worker.

“It’s really hard to be on the frontlines, seeing people fall through the cracks and knowing that there are solutions to a lot of the issues that they’re facing,” she said.

Meanwhile, Rancourt joked that people in the riding will be seeing her quite a bit ahead of next year’s election as she plans on going door-to-door and attending public events.

The next provincial election is currently scheduled to take place on Oct. 28, 2024.
