Gladys Dorothy Cunningham, at the age of 95, passed peacefully in her sleep on January 8, 2023 at The Good Shepherd Villas in Prince Albert, SK.
Gladys was born August 8, 1927 at Foxford, SK to Clyde and Kate Gear. She was the 5th of 7 children and loved growing up on the family farm. Helping her mother do farm chores and gardening resulted in her love of gardening and a strong work ethic. After graduating from a one room country school, she landed her first job at the Safeway in Prince Albert. In 1946 she met the love of her life, Percy Cunningham. Percy had heard here was a cute redhead working at Safeway, so he just had to go there to buy a chocolate bar! They were married in Prince Albert on October 3, 1948 and celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary this past year.
Gladys and Percy owned and operated several service stations over the course of their working lives. One in big River, the second in Edmonton, two in Waskesiu, with the last one being the Texico Station which they ran from 1961 until they retired in 1981. Gladys was a dedicated, hard worker who aside from pumping gas, running the till, maintaining a spotless garage, and training a number of young, inexperienced service station attendants, made many a hurried trip to Prince Albert to pick up various parts and items needed to keep Percy and the business humming along smoothly.
Gladys loved flowers, gardening, dancing, fishing, traveling, and being Aunty Gladys to her nieces and nephews and all the children of her many friends. She was always there to lend a helping and guiding hand. She was an active member and dedicated volunteer at St. Alban’s Cathedral for many years. In 2007 Gladys received the Order of Saskatchewan for her faithful and dedicated service to the Anglican Diocese of Saskatchewan. She was a well respected and much-loved member of the Anglican Church Community.
Gladys was predeceased by her mother and father, Clyde and Kate Gear; brothers John and Lynn; and sisters Eunice, alma Lorraine, and Gwen.
Gladys is survived by her loving husband Percy; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and God-Children; and many, many friends. She was loved by all and will be forever in our hearts.
Percy would like to thank Dr. Gordon Surkan, Dr. Alana Surkan, Pat Chuey and staff of Good Shepherd Villas for their kindness and gentle care of Gladys.
