A First Nations drum group from Saskatchewan is singing loud and proud after winning a big competition south of the border.

Ironswing which features members from Sturgeon Lake First Nation, Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation and other Indigenous communities were at Four Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota this past weekend. They were taking part in an Open Drum competition and won first place.

“It’s pretty good,” said Micah Daniels, with the group who added they also won first place the previous weekend at a competition near Loon Lake.

“It feels really good to represent the Plains and Cree people in my community.”

The group will be taking the next week off but Daniels said they will have a big summer coming up with a number of events and competitions. Their summer season will come to an end in September.

Daniels said he is not only thankful for the team that makes up Ironswing but for the ongoing support from his community.

“I thank my own community for all the support and my leadership and my own people are just really proud of us,” he said. “We want to continue to bring the bring home championships.”
