Seventh overall pick Meunier excited to sign with Raiders

This past week will be one that Ty Meunier won’t soon be forgetting.

On Thursday, the 2023 seventh overall pick signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Prince Albert Raiders exactly one week after being drafted by the club.

Meunier said he still can’t believe that he’s a member of the Raiders.

“It still feels like the draft was yesterday,” he said. “I’m really pumped to be selected by (the Raiders) and I think it’s going to be awesome.”

The St. Albert product was the third selection for the Raiders in the 2023 WHL Draft, going behind first-overall pick Daxon Rudolph and second-overall pick Riley Boychuk.

Meunier said he was at home watching the draft live when he heard his name called.

“I was watching the first round live on my laptop,” he said. “I stayed home from school and when I saw my name get called, I was pretty excited and honoured to be selected.”

“My phone was blowing up,” he continued. “From past coaches, coaches I’ve had this season, friends family, it was awesome.”

With training camp set to go towards the end of the summer, Meunier said he’s looking forward to coming to Prince Albert and meeting all the new faces and teammates with the Green and Gold.

As for next season, he said that he’s planning on sticking close to home.

“I’m going to be trying out for St. Albert U18AAA,” Meunier said. “I know (making the team) will be hard but I think I can do it. If I just keep working hard, have a good offseason, good training plan, and just keep doing what I’m doing and just go out there and perform, I think I won’t have a problem making it.”

Last season for the U15AAA Sabres, the 14-year-old registered 88 points with 54 goals and 34 assists in 32 games in the Alberta Elite Hockey League.
