Three for three: Raiders sign seventh overall pick Meunier

The third in a trifecta of Prince Albert Raiders first round picks in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft has officially signed with the team.

Ty Meunier, the team’s seventh overall pick in last week’s draft, has signed a WHL standard player agreement with the Raiders. Meunier is the third of the organization’s first round picks to officially sign in the last four days.

“I’ve heard really great things about the organization,” Meunier said. “I’ve heard it’s a great hockey town and that the rink fills up and it’s loud every night. It’s an honour to be selected and to sign with this organization.”

It was a banner year for Meunier with the St. Albert Sabres in the Alberta Elite Hockey League’s U15AAA ranks. He led the league in points, posting an incredible 88 in just 32 games, and added 54 goals, which was 20 more goals than the next closest player. In fact, his 54 goals were the most by any Alberta U15 AAA player in the last ten years.

Away from league play, his offensive exploits continued. He was the second-leading scorer and tied for the lead in goals at the Alberta Cup with four in five games, and also posted five goals in five games at the John Reid Bantam Tournament. To cap the season off, he finished with nine points in eight playoff games.

“I’m really dedicated and focused on hockey,” he explained. “I’m driven and dialed in on the job, but I like to have fun at the same time. As a hockey player, I skate well, have good vision, and I put the puck in the net well. I think I make my teammates around me better.”

As for the Raiders as a team, it will be another season yet before Meunier is able to play with the team full-time, but he knows the team’s future is bright. In addition to his two fellow first rounders, the Raiders boast the reigning rookie of the year in Ryder Ritchie, and another first round pick from the 2021 draft class in Cole Peardon.

“Everyone has been saying that this team will be really good in a couple of years,” Meunier said. “I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to play with those guys. Some of the guys on the team already texted me, and that was great leadership by them. I can tell they’re excited as much as I am to be a part of this team.”

The Raiders have already signed their other two first round picks Daxon Rudolph and Riley Boychuk.
