Frustration rises as SCFPA fraud case faces further delays

A man accused of stealing over $15,000 from the French Canadian Society of Prince Albert (SCFPA) was not present in court Wednesday, when his case was adjourned for the sixth time.

Ahmed Hassan Farah, 43, is a former community leader with the SCFPA and was employed between early 2017 and March, 2018. According to court records obtained by paNOW, charges of fraud and theft over $5,000, were sworn on Nov. 16, 2022.

Farah’s lawyer spoke to the judge by phone to explain they are still waiting for disclosure, and then requested a one-week adjournment.

The alleged theft itself is said to have occurred during Farah’s employment with the SCFPA. A spokesperson for SCFPA has informed paNOW that Farah’s employment ceased in March, 2018, and he had been employed for just over a year.

Farah was living in Alberta when the charge was laid, and is originally from the East African country of Djibouti. According to a statement posted by the French Canadian Society on Mar. 5, 2017, Farah was hired to replace former director Richard Grenier.

The statement went on to explain Farah holds a degree in financial analysis and business management, and prior to being hired as community leader, held the position of Head of Accounting and Administration at the SCFPA.

The SCFPA spokesperson has previous informed paNOW they are reserving further comment until a plea is entered, but following Wednesday’s hearing, again expressed frustration over how long the process is taking.

The case will return to Prince Albert Provincial Court on May 17.
