It is one of the Métis Nation’s highest civilian honours and now, nine students have received bronze medals and are invested into the Order of Gabriel Dumont.

The students come from Pinehouse Lake, La Loche, Meadow Lake, Leask, White City, Saskatoon, Île-à-la-Crosse, and Prince Albert.

The Order of Gabriel Dumont has been awarded since the 1980s and honours individuals with gold and silver medals for their contributions to the Métis of Canada.

In 2010, the bronze medal was introduced, which recognizes and honours outstanding students and alumni from Gabriel Dumont Institute. Since its inception, 54 students and alumni have been awarded the bronze medal.

“They are recognized as outstanding students who are motivated to serve their communities, and show pride for their Métis heritage,” said Lisa Bird-Wilson, executive director. “The bronze medal awards offer a valuable opportunity to showcase students who go above and beyond, contributing to the overall excellence within the Institute.”

This year’s bronze medal recipients include Leah McCallum, an NSITEP Student from Pinehouse Lake; Randon Herman and Ronalda Park, DTI students from La Loche; Christine Malboeuf, a DTI student from La Loche; Brianne McLennan, a SUNTEP student from Prince Albert, and Sheri-lyn Kadachuk another SUNTEP student from Saskatoon.

Also named to the Order of Gabriel Dumont are Travis Spriggs, a Métis Nation University Sponsorship Student from Leask; Cody Ludwig, a Gabriel Dumont Institute Training and Employment Client from Meadow Lake, and Tavia Terry, a SUNTEP Regina Student from the community of White City.
