Man accused of murdering woman and injuring youth, makes first court appearance

May 8, 2023 | 9:46 AM

A man accused of murder and attempted murder made his first court appearance Monday morning.

Thanh Nguyen, 45, does not speak English and a Vietnamese translator appeared by phone to assist with the proceedings.

When the translater spoke to Nguyen, he acknowledged his understanding by nodding his head.

Early Saturday morning, just before 3:30 a.m., Prince Albert Police were called to a home in the 1100 block of Second Street East after a 911 call.

When police arrived on scene, they found a 35-year-old deceased woman inside the home. A young girl was also inside and was transported to Victoria Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

On Sunday, a police vehicle was observed parked outside the residence. (Nigel Maxwell/paNOW Staff)

Nguyen has been charged with second degree murder and attempted murder. While the relationship between the accused and the victims is not clear, and there were no family members present in court, police have previously indicated all three were known to each other.

The case has been adjourned to May 23.
