The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority said the federal government has approved a terminal project following an environmental assessment process that started in 2013.

The marine container terminal in Delta, B.C. will deliver more capacity for Canada’s supply chains. The decision came as west coast marine container terminals were forecast to hit capacity by the mid to late 2020s.

Port Authority president and CEO Robin Silvester said this will improve the supply-chain and deliver economic benefits for Canadian businesses.

“I’d like to thank Indigenous and local communities, scientists, industry, chambers of commerce, and all tiers of government, who have played such an important role in shaping the project,” he said.

The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project includes new land and a new three-berth marine container terminal near existing port terminals at Roberts Bank.

The project will increase Canada’s west coast container capacity by roughly one-third.

Canadian National Railway has upped its financial forecast for the year after reaping record first-quarter revenues from a bumper grain crop and higher oil prices.

The outlook comes despite the CEO expecting a shrinking economy throughout much of the year, as volumes sag for shipping containers and some bulk cargo.

Chief executive Tracy Robinson said the railway’s current volumes indicate a mild recession and it’s unclear how long it will go on.

However, as overall volumes slip, the company plans to avoid cutting employees and focus on training locomotive engineers.

Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre said the Red River is expected to peak in the coming week.

Flows and levels are rising or remain high in major rivers as water from Saskatchewan and the United States arrive in Manitoba.

Up to 15 millimetres of precipitation is forecast for central and western Manitoba starting tomorrow and ending Thursday.

It also warned there is still up to 20 centimetres of snow remaining in some areas, and above-freezing temperatures forecast for the coming days could create a fast melt.
