City appoints new police board member as temporary fill

Marlo Pritchard, head of the Sask. Public Safety Agency, is now a member of the Prince Albert Police Commission, at least until the end of the year and as soon as he swears an oath of confidentiality.

Pritchard is a temporary appointment following the resignation of the previous chairperson, Darcy Sander.

City Coun. Blake Edwards said he thinks having a person connected to the province on the commission might be helpful.

“I think that this is going to show some of the difficulties that the commission or the police association are going through. There will be some clarity. I think this is going to help,” he said.

City council approved the recommendation that came from the mayor’s office in a unanimous decision.

Coun. Don Cody voted in favour but said that he had some trepidation of having provincial and municipal jurisdictions overlap.

“I’m not suggesting they foisted this person on us, but I think they suggested this person for us and that’s a bit of a rub for me,” he said.

Council focused on the fact that the appointment is temporary and that it is one vote.

“Darcy was a very fair chair who listened to the association’s needs and desires. Also kept the board in check,” said Edwards.

He said that Sanders went above and beyond, taking additional courses so he could do a good job and make sure the board was run properly.

“He was not asked to resign. It was a personal decision of Darcy’s to not go further with the challenges that are there,” said Edwards.
