Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau is heading to Japan to promote Canada as a trade partner of choice, and discuss the current Canada-Japan trade relationship.

Bibeau will discuss Canadian agricultural opportunities with Japanese agri-food stakeholders, Canadian industry associations, and Canadian businesses in Japan.

Bibeau will also attend the G7 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting this weekend and discuss key priorities for Canada’s international agriculture trade relationships.

The Future of PED Working Group, set up in response to a major outbreak in 2021-2022, looks at PED management strategies including what was working and what needed to change.

Manitoba Pork Director of Swine Health Jenelle Hamblin said there has been a continuous decline in PED cases.

“We’re looking at a 50 per cent reduction for our next large-scale outbreak, so looking at 132 cases from 2021-2022, reducing that down to half or 65 in 2024 and then year over year reducing by half is one of our main targets,” Hamblin said. “One of our main targets is shortening the amount of time that a premise is positive for PED.”

Hamblin said if a producer can shorten the amount of time that the farm takes to eliminate the disease, it reduces the overall risk to the sector and the potential spread of the disease.

CNH Industrial said it sold off its business activities in Russia for roughly $60 million.

This follows the company’s announcement in March 2022 that it was suspending supplies to this market.

Up until March 2022, CNH operated a corporate office in the Moscow region where it managed the import and distribution of its products in Russia, regional business activities and commercial financing.

Its industrial footprint included manufacturing sites for agricultural equipment and implements and construction equipment, and a parts depot. These sites employed approximately 200 employees.

For the fiscal year ending 2021, the last full year of operations, the Russian operations generated revenue of approximately $380 million.
