It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our parents, Norman and Elsie Howat. Even though Dad passed away on December 22, 2018, we wanted to wait until Mom passed to make this announcement. Elsie passed away April 9, 2023 after a tragic fall. The reason is that they were a special couple who lived for one another. They were Norman and Elsie. Norman was born to Thomas (TR) and Rhoda Howat in February 1930. Elsie was born to Karl (KF) and Stina Andersson in October 1929. They met as school children in Canwood, Saskatchewan and married in the summer of 1953. Norman was an active sportsman in his younger years playing baseball, hockey and golf. He was an entrepreneur who had many different occupations throughout his life. He owned a trucking company, a grocery store (C&H), a bakery, a John Deere dealership, a Shell bulk and gas station, and finally an insurance agency. Elsie worked for many years at the CIBC in Canwood and then became a full-time homemaker in 1959 when Dawn Marie arrived. In 1961 Tracy Ann was born and in 1968 Tamie arrived. Elsie never sat down. She was an amazing cook, baker, gardener, knitter, caregiver and friend. They loved to travel (by car/RV), camp and spend time with friends and family. Their friends in many ways became family. They nurtured and cared for their friends and developed deep connections with them, somehow adopting them. In 1975 John Deere took the family to Prince Albert. In 1991 they moved back to Canwood to look after Elsie’s father. In 1995 they made their final move to Calgary. Since Norman’s passing Elsie actively enjoyed residing at the Lake Bonavista Retirement Village.
They are survived by daughter Dawn Marie (Howard Betts), their children Carling, Evan (Amanda), their great grandson Issac, daughter Tracy Ann (Ralph Rott), daughter Tamie (Sean Sinclair) their daughter Emily, and Elsie’s sister Sonja (Torben Nielsen) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
They are predeceased by Norman’s parents, Thomas (TR) and Rhoda Howat, brothers, Tommy and Willy, sisters Lillian, Annie and Rosemary, Elsie’s parents, Karl (KF) and Stina Andersson, sister Lily and brother Rudy.
At their request there will not be a service at this time. Interment will occur at a future date in the North Cemetery, Canwood, Saskatchewan.
In lieu of flowers, please direct your donations to a charity of your choice.
We wish to thank Dr. Friesen and the nursing staff on Units 74 and 56 at the Rockyview Hospital for the care given to Elsie during her last weeks of life.
