John Schmidt

November 27, 1928 – March 12, 2023

The family of John Schmidt is saddened to announce his passing on March 12, 2023 at Mont St. Joseph Home.  John was born at Hepburn, SK to parents Julius and Lena Schmidt.

John is survived by his wife Sylvia, his son Wayne, his daughter Wendy (Tim) Steele, his grandson Drew (Mandy) Steele, great grandchildren Sawyer and Paisley, and his grandson Riley (Sophie) Steele.

John grew up on a mixed farm 2 ½ miles from Hepburn and helped with the farm while growing up. Once he was old enough, his dad gave him 40 acres of land to farm but when he received $64.00 at years end from his failed crop he decided that was the end of him being a farmer. John then attended Teachers College and spent many summers attending The University of Saskatchewan to complete his Arts and Education Degrees. He spent the next 34 years as a teacher in Prince Albert before retiring in 1985.

John was a great handyman and spent many summers building cabins, garages, and numerous other building projects. He enjoyed his many hobbies such as ham radio, snowmobiling, curling, skiing, golf, wood carving, and reading western novels.

He and Sylvia spent many winters travelling and made their winter home in Mesa, AZ where they enjoyed the weather and the company of their numerous friends.

John’s wife and family will lovingly remember his generosity, kindness, and witty sense of humour.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.
